Big Read List

I feel like I have forgotten how to post.

"The Big Read reckons that the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books they've printed."
1) Look at the list and bold those you have read.
2) Italicize those you intend to read.
3) Underline the books you LOVE.
4) Reprint this list in your own LJ so we can try and track down these people who've read 6 and force books upon them ;-)

Oddly, only 7 of these I have read in the last 10 years. Not counting rereads. )

On my bookshelf to be read:

The Host by Stephanie Meyer
The Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray

Um, I've never cooked fish before, let alone a whole fish. I'm both mortified and intrigued.

Rewatching . . .

Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down

Doral: It bothers you doesn't it?

Six: We'll get them in the end.

Doral: No, it bothers you that you have never experienced it.

Six: You saw the way Helo was when he took her away? He was pathetic.

Doral: I can't help wondering what it would feel like to feel that - intensely. Even in his anguish, he seemed. . . so alive.

Six chokes back tears of denial. Doral has a small look of longing on his face.

Hypothesis: The original skin jobs must betray themselves, become "human" to "feel".

Proof:
Sharon staying with Helo
Caprica going back to Galactica
D'Anna pursuing the Five
Leoben shepherding Kara?

Does this apply to the Final Five?

Side Note: WHY is Gossip Girl not on itunes yet?

So I am avidly watching the last season of BSG, but still feeling a bit lost on catching up with the fandom. So here are some thoughts on 1- 3, heavy on 3.

You are not cool.

Damn those Giants who knocked Dallas out.

Um, Dell? So not cool. Want to know how to run an advertising campaign? See Macbook Air.

I hung on for the commericals but really should have just watch the Bourne Ultimatum.

Except for Angelina. Because spies are cool.

Is House on yet? (this is desperation because I don't like Hugh, but I appreciate the procedural method in this vast wasteland.)

Suck It Babe
So I was having a sex dream this morning. And it was Brad Pitt! Here we are in a hotel, naked, getting down to business, and we are about to do it, and then I stop him and ask for a condom. So he goes to find one. And my alarm goes off!

Argh! It's fantasy actor sex and my dream conscience has to ask for a condom?

So wrong.

Can I just say - I love Chuck!

I've always admired it's classic referential style - playing with the Indiana Jones and Jason Bourne themes.

But -

Takes the cake!

Still an utterly lost puppy without a laptop.

Went to the Mac store today as just about everyone I have asked say Macbook! without hesitation. Thanks for all the recs!

Damn. They are beautiful. Now I have to figure out a way to get one.

In Dallas. Got my haircut.

Baked pumpkin cupcakes and pecan pie today. The cupcakes are my choice. The pecan pie, I can barely stand anymore, but the relatives and my parents love it, but mom doesn't cook anymore. And I can't get the darn things to set.

Bought Firefly today with a $19.99 coupon for Borders.

Argh! The moment I write about 250 words of Katee / Callum, my laptop dies. I think I am jinxed.

So I learned that screws are important. I found one a few weeks ago, and I didn't know what it was to, but I set it aside and now I don't know where it is. Unfortunately it was to my laptop. Specifically the back hinge joint connecting the screen to the base. And it popped out, and when I popped it back in, it must have affected the power button, because now the connection is lost and it won't turn on.

I took it to the Geek Squad, and was very sad because the guy helping me was so far away from Chuck. $90 to send it off. and then who knows more once they've evalutated. And it will be gone for 2 - 4 WEEKS!

I feel lost. Last time my laptop was in for repairs [info]siryn99 got me through the withdrawal by introducing me to BSG. She got them to me with about an hour's notice at 5pm on a Friday. Bless her. Of course, I think the prospect of me writing porn may have been her motive.

So if any kinda soul would spoil me with tv seasons, I'd be very grateful. I've been meaning to check out Rome. Or anything else you would recommend.

My only current bright spot is that I will see Razor on the big screen on Monday with siryn and some friends.

Sigh.

First Sunday of November

Is Marathon Sunday. I'm at Mile 17.

I've fallen head over heels for Friday Nights Lights. It was always a foregone conclusion, I'm hardwired to like this show. Texas football is in my blood. I'd only watched here and there over the first season and then last weekend I started doing the Netflix Watch Now and by Monday I realized I should just buy S1 on dvd, and finished all of S1 yesterday.

Here's what I love:

- Texas football done right. In Texas, it's not the Cowboys (though at 5 you aspire to wear those white Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader hot pants) and not about the Aggies or the Longhorns, it all starts with Friday night. It's where you cut your teeth. And it's a sport in its purest form - where it's not predetermined, it's not about sponsorship or all the other things that get in the way. Anything can happen. And the wins and losses can come out of nowhere. Yes, this is a subject I can rhapsodize about.

- Real characters and actual character development! Such a novel idea, and even better when it can be managed for a large cast.

- The Taylors. Coach is the best ever! He is flawed and totally himself and totally loves his family and football. Tami is the best mom ever, always has the best wisdom and is all heart. Julie is a brat, but growing up, and I'll forgive her for that mostly.

- Tim Riggins. The definition of a Hot Mess. Definitely whipped-cream worth.

- Buddy Garrity. Another wonderfully flawed and warped, but utterly real character holding on to former glory and living through these kids.

- Texas Stadium - Season finale game was beautiful and made me teary-eyed. My high school team did make it to the playoffs in Texas Stadium, but unfortunately my memories were not so pristine. It had been raining and the turf was wet and smelled like rotten meat. I high-kicked on the 50 yard line at half time, but it was a bit of a mess. The partial dome creates an odd echo effect, so our drill team was off-beat on our kick routine. But we did win the game. Only to lose at a game away from state in Waco in 14F sleeting rain and the bitch drill director had us wearing the warm weather uniform with bare legs cause she couldn't read a weather report.

- Almost real life. I grew up in a big city, but I am sure in small Texas towns, the football players are the celebrities. The two big parts of football culture that are not represented: the drill team and the band. The rally girls are kinda the drill team, but the Kilgore Rangerette style high-kick line is missing. And where are the band nerds? Even Bible-belt Dillon has to have some counterculture, which seems to migrate itself towards the band. Texas halftimes are a time-honored tradition and I wish we could see them here.

Mid week blahs

Cruelty
Haven't really been able to find the energy to unspool my thoughts and post much lately.

But Bionic Woman has really hit the vicious snark button tonight.

Can you fake a British accent? That's just cringeworthy to have a British actress faking an American who is faking a British accent.

My biggest complaint about this show - other than that there is not enough Katee - is that Michelle Ryan sucks. She is SO a poor man's Jennifer Garner. I never thought that JG was an amazing actress - I didn't think she was horrid either - but she certainly had the secret spy and girl-next-door market cornered.

Which leads me to ask - who was the idiot who cast Jaime Sommers as Syndey Bristow v. 2.0? The comparisons are too obvious. Why wouldn't you want to reinvision her as a brand new type.

So are we ready to reinvent the series with Katee as the lead? She's 100 times more interesting in a way that I never went for Anna Espinosa.

But on a more positive note - Gossip Girl is the best subway ipod candy ever! And Chuck got upgraded to real-time after Prison Break decided to be stupid and alienate its fans.

Premiere Week Part 2

So Bionic Woman won last night's battle. But really it is more for Katee than liking the content.

Katee is delightful. Michelle Ryan not so much. I keep thinking how she is not right for the role. And how if you recast it with Jennifer Garner I would be riveted. And that is saying something since my Alias love is almost non-existence. Or maybe JG is branded into my mind as the girl next door. But I bought Evangeline. Though Kate turned out not to be the girl next door. But then Sydney was never the girl next door. Love the Aaron and Mark cameos. More, more!

I've only seen half of Gossip Girl and I love it. Maybe I am primed because I live on the Upper East. I think this one will be the perfect subway candy. Download to the ipod and watch during the commute. Chuck might also go this route.

Greys: Bailey and Cally's eyerolls were perfect. No one beats the Nazi. Watch and learn Cally.

ETA: George totally said it! The sister is kind of awesome. Screw Meredith. Just don't let the sister fall for McDreamy. Cause she deserves better!

New TV season Notes so far:

Prison Break: So much better when Michaels on the inside and finding new ways to work the system. Biggest injustice - no tattoos yet! Why did we have to look at Bellick in tighty whiteys but no shirtless Michael?

Chuck: Haven't seen it yet, but hoping I can view online. It's got spies. What can I say?

Heroes: SARK! Bonus points for scruff! I guess I finally must catch up with this show.

Bones: This one is finally growing on me. Probably cause I watched reruns all summer cause there was NO OTHER DRAMAS on. Fun, but not searching out the smut fic.

Sexy New Thing

The Saga of the Ipod . . .

My ipod mini was stolen. It was annoying, but honestly, it's not a bad time for a forced upgrade. They are doing construction in our offices and someone hit 5 offices in a row, when we were in a meeting. Said he was getting recylcing, but we only recycle in central locations and not in each office, so he totally pulled a con job. The thing that pissed me off the most - the head of office services told me they would replace it, which I was not expecting. But then a week later she backtracked and had the gall to leave this on a voicemail and not tell me in person. I really did not expect to be reimbursed in the first place but then once you have been given a genine "I'm in charge and it will happen" assurance, then it's annoying when there is no follow through.

So I lasted a week without an ipod in Manhattan. When you have a 45 min - 1 hr walking and subway commute, well, time moves faster with a beat. Funny how such a little thing has now become indespensable. So the next question was - broke, blown, or bedlam? [info]siryn99 would be so proud that this only took 2 days to decide. (this is an improvement. really!)

At issue - nano, classic, or touch. The itouch is certainly sexy, but when I looked at the actual memory - it's no where on par with the classic, and the itouch is a device that I would want to have great memory. And it's still so new - like the iphone - I think the 2nd generation model is going to fix a lot of bugs. Then there is the classic which has mind-boggling memory - more than my laptop! But do I really want to pay for a classic and then let it collect dust when I upgrade in a year?

So in the end, I went by Best Buy and played with the nano and loved it! It's so thin - barely bigger than a credit card! And pretty video! I think my main issue was how much video could it hold, but then looking at the battery playing time: 5 hours for video on the nano and touch and 7 hours on the classic. Neither of these are going to last an overseas flight, but the nano would get me to Dallas just fine, so I decided not to go for overkill.

Here's the new sexy thing:

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Hoping the easy video access will tease out the fic . . .

In another news - [info]lunasky, I got the package! Loved G's drawing! Must catch up!

In food news - I had the most divine thing in Victoria, Texas of all places - Fried Avocado. Avocado stuffed with chicken and monterey jack cheese, and battered and deep fried. I'm not asking how much fat - never seen it before on a menu and doubt I will again. It was heaven.
