BSG Catch Up

So I am avidly watching the last season of BSG, but still feeling a bit lost on catching up with the fandom. So here are some thoughts on 1- 3, heavy on 3.

Cylons:

I never truly thought the cylons were worth the time away from the Starbuck & Apollo Show, until we got to the Final Five, Leoben being the execption. Now I find them 100 times more twisty and interesting with all the implications that go along with the Five.

Birth Order:

I'm really glad that this has finally been identified. And what's really intriguing - we know 1-6 and 8. So I think that brings up some really twisty questions as to 7. Is 7 the final member of the five yet to be revealed or is 7 one of the four we already know?

I'm leaning towards the latter as I think that 7 & 8 may be the most conflicted of the cylons. Look as Sharon. At our weekly watching party schunard1 said that Sharon is Judas which really started me thinking. There is Athena, who has turned her back on the traditional cylons, and then there is Boomer who betrayed Galactica by shooting the Admiral and now she's the one cylon to go against her model and vote with the Cavil's & Crew.

Sharon was identified in Season 1 as being a "weak model" by her fellow cylons, and I wonder if they were referring to the fact that she was created after the first of the Final Five. And it is possible that her ability to conceive is related to the fact that she was created after they identified the technology for the five. And the only other cylon known to conceive is Tyrol, who is probably a 9 - 12.

Which brings me back to 7. Theorizing that 8 shares more in common with the Five, then 7 might share more with the traditional models. And that makes me wonder if Tory is 7, because if there is a final Five who doesn't seem to be sold on their unity, it is Tory. Tory also has a history of being maybe not Judas per se but definitely colder and closer to 6. Her loyalties have been gray - she tampered with the presidential vote, she has used her sexuality to play with Baltar, and now she is not afraid to remove Cally when she became a direct threat.

Cylon Civil War:

I've read a lot of fan theories that say there will be a cylon civil war between the traditional and the Final Five, but I think it fascinating that it is currently playing out with the traditional models. I am convinced that Cavil has a god-complex being 1 and may even think that he is the creator as he often switched between shepard and agnostic heretic. I also think it is interesting that he is most adamant that the others not think of the Final Five, probably due to his god-complex. So when he tricks 6 and crew, who will escape?

It could be very interesting if the only ones who survive are elsewhere - Caprica, Athena, and Boomer. But then that would leave Leoben in the dust, and I think Kara still needs her spiratual guide to get her to earth. Which leads me to Kara.

Kara:

Persephone:

Back when I learned early that Kara would die, I did some fic therapy. I decided that I would craft Kara as Persephone, so she could go into the dark cylon netherworld and then be reborn so she could come back to Galactica. My theory was that she was not a creature of Hades (cylons) but still fully human, as she would return to the surface (fleet). But to accomplish this she must eat the pomegrante seeds (die) and experience a transformation. So in sum my fic theory was that she would be the first human to be downloaded. Being downloaded would not make her a cylon, but would give her new links to them and put her on the quest to Earth. Plus, I also just loved the imagery of Kara coming back to the fleet in a brand new body and no tattoos or scars.

Now the reality of the show has echoed on this. It's her viper that is completely new, but not her body. She has returned with an overidding purpose - to return to earth, and being taken off task has had seriously damaging affects to her sanity, almost as if something won't compute unless she finds earth. It is further born through in The Ties That Bind as she feels distanced from herself - and even says that her body is an alien thing that her mind is still attached too. I don't know where it is all going, but I love the implications.

Kara vs. Roslin:

If I had gotten around to posting after He That Believeth in Me, I would have commented on how forced it seemed that Roslin absolutely refused to acknoweledge that Kara could be a messenger from the Gods. I'm glad that it was addressed in Six of One, but I am still concerned that they continue to write Roslin so flatly. But the confrontation scene was brilliant.

The Good Ship Starbuck:

All I can say is that her crew is perfection! Poor, poor Gaeta. Thought I still think that in Six of One, when he was sniping at Starbuck over star charts - the question isn't just where, but where and when.

Captain Apollo:

The advantage of Flat! Roslin is of course her constant understimation of Captain Apollo. When is she going to remember not to ask question but say thank you for saving our collective asses! I do love that Lee has finally found his purpose. And it been so obvoious since the start that Lee gets more interesting when he has a cause - Bastille Day and then the trial. And hopefully now we have finally found a way to bring back Zarek and make Roslin more accountable.

So I was having a sex dream this morning. And it was Brad Pitt! Here we are in a hotel, naked, getting down to business, and we are about to do it, and then I stop him and ask for a condom. So he goes to find one. And my alarm goes off!

Argh! It's fantasy actor sex and my dream conscience has to ask for a condom?

So wrong.

A bit earlier this year, but not too many people were in town, and having already spent 13 days in Dallas, I decided it was time to skip out early this year

- Have been in a baking frenzy, but didn't get around to taking pictures:

Rum Cake
Chocolate Mint Torte
New Orleans Chocolate Praline Cake
Gingerbread Cookies
Sugar Cookies
Chocolate Chip Cookies
Chocolate Espresso Snowcapes
Chocolate Almond Apricot Brittle

- Saw The Golden Compass with sartael, brigitf, sixdie and crew.

Loved seeing it come alive on an epic scale. To prep for the movie, I had listened to the audio book instead of rereading. I must rave about the audio - it's one of the few audios that is done with a full cast, so it feels like a staged performance, and Philip Pullman reads the narrator part, so his added intimacy with his own charchters adds intimate layers of brillance.

But, the movie - Lyra was so much better than I expected. She captured just the right amount of curiosity and audacity. And Nicole Kidman was coldly brilliant.

And the Bears! Well, I've been raving about the armored bears since I read the book long ago. Fascinating. But really could have lived with Gandalf! Iorek.

Other New Line annoyances: the prologue felt tremendously like LOTR, as did the You Shall Not Pass! Ice Bridge, and the balloon ride off into sunset and robbing us of the ultimate betrayal of Lord Asriel killing Roger.

Serafina Pekkala was enchanting, but I wish they had preserved the first meeting as Kaiser, her daemon, and not her. I understand that these are page / movie translation issues, but I really wish she hadn't caught a bad case of the exposition fairy.

The other thing that I found very troublesome was how they flip-flopped the liberation of the kids at Bolvangar and Ice Bear fight at Svalbard. I don't think the author had an elegant transition between these two scenes, but it just seemed very incongruous.

Argh! The moment I write about 250 words of Katee / Callum, my laptop dies. I think I am jinxed.

So I learned that screws are important. I found one a few weeks ago, and I didn't know what it was to, but I set it aside and now I don't know where it is. Unfortunately it was to my laptop. Specifically the back hinge joint connecting the screen to the base. And it popped out, and when I popped it back in, it must have affected the power button, because now the connection is lost and it won't turn on.

I took it to the Geek Squad, and was very sad because the guy helping me was so far away from Chuck. $90 to send it off. and then who knows more once they've evalutated.
Is Marathon Sunday. I'm at Mile 17.

I've fallen head over heels for Friday Nights Lights. It was always a foregone conclusion, I'm hardwired to like this show. Texas football is in my blood. I'd only watched here and there over the first season and then last weekend I started doing the Netflix Watch Now and by Monday I realized I should just buy S1 on dvd, and finished all of S1 yesterday.

Here's what I love:

- Texas football done right. In Texas, it's not the Cowboys (though at 5 you aspire to wear those white Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader hot pants) and not about the Aggies or the Longhorns, it all starts with Friday night. It's where you cut your teeth. And it's a sport in its purest form - where it's not predetermined, it's not about sponsorship or all the other things that get in the way. Anything can happen. And the wins and losses can come out of nowhere. Yes, this is a subject I can rhapsodize about.

- Real characters and actual character development! Such a novel idea, and even better when it can be managed for a large cast.

- The Taylors. Coach is the best ever! He is flawed and totally himself and totally loves his family and football. Tami is the best mom ever, always has the best wisdom and is all heart. Julie is a brat, but growing up, and I'll forgive her for that mostly.

- Tim Riggins. The definition of a Hot Mess. Definitely whipped-cream worth.

- Buddy Garrity. Another wonderfully flawed and warped, but utterly real character holding on to former glory and living through these kids.

- Texas Stadium - Season finale game was beautiful and made me teary-eyed. My high school team did make it to the playoffs in Texas Stadium, but unfortunately my memories were not so pristine. It had been raining and the turf was wet and smelled like rotten meat. I high-kicked on the 50 yard line at half time, but it was a bit of a mess. The partial dome creates an odd echo effect, so our drill team was off-beat on our kick routine. But we did win the game. Only to lose at a game away from state in Waco in 14F sleeting rain and the bitch drill director had us wearing the warm weather uniform with bare legs cause she couldn't read a weather report.

- Almost real life. I grew up in a big city, but I am sure in small Texas towns, the football players are the celebrities. The two big parts of football culture that are not represented: the drill team and the band. The rally girls are kinda the drill team, but the Kilgore Rangerette style high-kick line is missing. And where are the band nerds? Even Bible-belt Dillon has to have some counterculture, which seems to migrate itself towards the band. Texas halftimes are a time-honored tradition and I wish we could see them here.

Haven't really been able to find the energy to unspool my thoughts and post much lately.

But Bionic Woman has really hit the vicious snark button tonight.

Can you fake a British accent? That's just cringeworthy to have a British actress faking an American who is faking a British accent.

My biggest complaint about this show - other than that there is not enough Katee - is that Michelle Ryan sucks. She is SO a poor man's Jennifer Garner. I never thought that JG was an amazing actress - I didn't think she was horrid either - but she certainly had the secret spy and girl-next-door market cornered.

Which leads me to ask - who was the idiot who cast Jaime Sommers as Syndey Bristow v. 2.0? The comparisons are too obvious. Why wouldn't you want to reinvision her as a brand new type.

So are we ready to reinvent the series with Katee as the lead? She's 100 times more interesting in a way that I never went for Anna Espinosa.

But on a more positive note - Gossip Girl is the best subway ipod candy ever! And Chuck got upgraded to real-time after Prison Break decided to be stupid and alienate its fans.

So Bionic Woman won last night's battle. But really it is more for Katee than liking the content.

Katee is delightful. Michelle Ryan not so much. I keep thinking how she is not right for the role. And how if you recast it with Jennifer Garner I would be riveted. And that is saying something since my Alias love is almost non-existence. Or maybe JG is branded into my mind as the girl next door. But I bought Evangeline. Though Kate turned out not to be the girl next door. But then Sydney was never the girl next door. Love the Aaron and Mark cameos. More, more!

I've only seen half of Gossip Girl and I love it. Maybe I am primed because I live on the Upper East. I think this one will be the perfect subway candy. Download to the ipod and watch during the commute.
The Saga of the Ipod . . .

My ipod mini was stolen. It was annoying, but honestly, it's not a bad time for a forced upgrade. They are doing construction in our offices and someone hit 5 offices in a row, when we were in a meeting. Said he was getting recylcing, but we only recycle in central locations and not in each office, so he totally pulled a con job. The thing that pissed me off the most - the head of office services told me they would replace it, which I was not expecting. But then a week later she backtracked and had the gall to leave this on a voicemail and not tell me in person. I really did not expect to be reimbursed in the first place but then once you have been given a genine "I'm in charge and it will happen" assurance, then it's annoying when there is no follow through.

So I lasted a week without an ipod in Manhattan. When you have a 45 min - 1 hr walking and subway commute, well, time moves faster with a beat. Funny how such a little thing has now become indespensable. So the next question was - broke, blown, or bedlam? siryn99 would be so proud that this only took 2 days to decide. (this is an improvement. really!)

At issue - nano, classic, or touch. The itouch is certainly sexy, but when I looked at the actual memory - it's no where on par with the classic, and the itouch is a device that I would want to have great memory. And it's still so new - like the iphone - I think the 2nd generation model is going to fix a lot of bugs. Then there is the classic which has mind-boggling memory - more than my laptop! But do I really want to pay for a classic and then let it collect dust when I upgrade in a year?

So in the end, I went by Best Buy and played with the nano and loved it! It's so thin - barely bigger than a credit card! And pretty video! I think my main issue was how much video could it hold, but then looking at the battery playing time: 5 hours for video on the nano and touch and 7 hours on the classic. Neither of these are going to last an overseas flight, but the nano would get me to Dallas just fine, so I decided not to go for overkill.

Here's the new sexy thing:

Hoping the easy video access will tease out the fic . . .

In another news - lunasky, I got the package! Loved G's drawing! Must catch up!

In food news - I had the most divine thing in Victoria, Texas of all places - Fried Avocado. Avocado stuffed with chicken and monterey jack cheese, and battered and deep fried. I'm not asking how much fat - never seen it before on a menu and doubt I will again. It was heaven.

I spent most of the afternoon making enchiladas and rearranging my bookshelves. I'm not sure if this was productive or avoidance - I was supposed to do laundry.

Enchiladas took all aftenoon because I got chicken with the bone on and made my own stock and used the meat in the enchiladas. Also had my first experience with tomatillos. Have no idea why I ever thought they were scary. They were easy to work with and made a delicious sauce.

Rearranging the bookshelves sounds a bit nitpicky. But my apt is only so big, and so I liquidated some and reorganized to maximize space. Last time I dusted I didn't put them back right, and lost a lot of space. It's like a jigsaw puzzle.

Have Cape Cod pics to post.

Thanks to anonyme1 for the package! I got my dose of spies!

My nose is sniffling because I dusted.

I have a cell phone again! Mine hasn't worked since I saw Pirates 3. It was on it's last legs and then snapped in half. I had enough time on my contract to upgrade and was looking at a Razr, but then I didn't like the upgrade pricing Sprint was giving me, so I waited. And then that shiny new iphone came out, which is so beyond my budget, but might be attainable at Christmas, so I didn't really want to get locked into another contract with Sprint. Ultimately I decided it was better to switch to AT&T. And I got Best Buy to match the AT&T web special of a free Razr v3xx, so now I am back in black. siryn99 doesn't have to roll her eyes at me anymore!

And I have good news on my tv. That service plan that Best Buy has you buy? Totally forgot about it, but they sent me a nice little 45 day renewal notice, which means I can go take it in and have them fix the striping that has appeared on the screen the last few months and hopefully get the dvd to stop sticking! Only problem is I have to carry it in. . .

Now if I could only decide whether to turn coat and final get a NY drivers license. . .

Am completely breathless with anticipation over Friday. 10 years. A real phenomenon. It's gonna take a long time for anything to equal this.

Finally saw Order of the Phoenix:

I think this is probably one of my favorites - just behind Azkaban. I just loved the added weight and depth it had. Something that Goblet of Fire was lacking.

- The opening scene was chilling - love how they kicked it off with the dementor attack.

- Arabella Figg was not at all what I expected.

- Dolores Umbridge was a million times more. Absolutely divine!

- House of Black was cool; wish we had seen more. The tapestry was great. And Sirius and Remus sitting at the table when Harry first got there - sends the mind in many directions.

- Luna! She's the bestest with that slightly vacant but totally accepting expression.

- DA - loved how they put together those scenes.

- Missed St. Mungo's, but I am glad they gave Neville his due.

- The Weasley twins rock! What more is there to say? Other than I can't wait to see them in dragon skin leather jackets.

- Found the occumency segue a bit abrupt, but Alan Rickman sells anything. And Snape's worst memory! I can't wait to the dvd and hope it is expanded in the extras.

- Loved McGonagall for stepping that step higher than Umbridge. Though I really missed her offering Umbridge a cough drop.

- Was also disappointed that we didn't get to see Hermione's awesome snitch curse.

- The Mysteries were magnificently haunting. And Sirius calling Harry, "James" made my breath catch in my throat.

Now I think I will rewatch Flesh and Bone and try to either find Persephone or reasons for Katee and Callum to play.

Is it Friday yet?
